You’re not hiring production. You’re hiring collective intelligence.
By Robert McCulloch
How do you bring hundreds of productions’ worth of experience into your next project? That may be the real value of a good production partner.
In my last Field Note, Maybe We’re Solving the Wrong Problem, I argued that commercial production has become a systems problem. Instead of rebuilding the production team around a new Director each time, perhaps brands and agencies should choose a production partner first, then bring in the right Director for each job.
That raises an obvious question: why not build the capability in-house?
For some businesses, that will be the right answer. But I think there is a strong case for an external production partner.
The expected value is that they learn your business and how you like to work. The greater value is everything they learn while they aren’t working for you.
A good production company learns for a living. Every campaign exposes it to different problems, budgets and ways of working. Over time, that experience compounds.
This is where I think people sometimes misunderstand what they’re hiring. A strong freelance producer can deliver an excellent project. A production partner should bring the accumulated judgement of the wider organisation: what has already been tested, which points of friction have been removed and where the money is best spent.
None of those lessons transforms a campaign on its own. Together, they mean the next job doesn’t begin at zero.
We don’t start from scratch. We start from experience.
This is also where the Springbok analogy from the previous article becomes more interesting. Their strength isn’t simply that they have a system. It’s that the system keeps learning.
Rassie didn’t build it alone. The coaching group brings experience from different countries, teams and rugby cultures. Those perspectives aren’t valuable because they all agree. They’re valuable because each adds something the system didn’t have before.
The best production partners work in the same way. Every project makes them a little smarter for the next one. Not only because they understand your business better, but because they’ve been exposed to other businesses and other ways of solving problems.
That’s the value you’re buying. Not just the people working on today’s project, but the experience of every project that came before it.
