First things first
By Robert McCulloch
Field Notes is a place for the things that emerge from the work.
There aren’t too many rules. We might get right into the weeds of a project or write about something more personal. At other times, it may simply be a passing thought inspired by something we’ve seen. The freedom to follow whatever interests us is part of the magic. We’ll also try very hard not to take ourselves too seriously.
In part, this is a ritual for us. It gives us a reason to stop and think about what the work has taught us before moving on to the next thing. Every project should leave something behind that we can carry forward. Taken together, that becomes our collective intelligence. I think they call that IP.
Labour over a thought for too long and the energy disappears.
There also needs to be some speed to it. These notes won’t always be perfectly polished, and some thoughts may still be unresolved. They’re written while the ideas are alive.
We may return to something months later and disagree with ourselves. That’s part of it too. This is a record of thinking in motion, not a collection of fixed positions.
There will be different authors, each with their own point of view. We’ve worked together long enough to trust one another and share a direction without needing to share every opinion. If every thought had to survive a committee before being published, we’d say very little. Whatever remained would probably be far less interesting.
In our day jobs, the audience is always part of the equation. It has to be. Field Notes gives us a small space to follow our own curiosity and explore something without first having to prove that anyone else will care.
Of course, we hope you do. Comment, disagree or take the conversation somewhere we hadn’t considered.
Ok, let’s do this.
